Lexington, KY

The Association of Air Pollution Control Agencies (AAPCA) is announcing 2024 Best Practices in Air Pollution Control, recognizing exemplary air agency programs in Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and San Joaquin Valley, California. Designated annually, AAPCA’s Best Practices in Air Pollution Control highlight innovative programs, groundbreaking technology, and meritorious operations in the field of air pollution control. Of particular interest are activities that are directly transferrable to the operation of an air pollution control agency.

Three programs were featured at the AAPCA 2024 Fall Business Meeting, in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday, August 29:

  • Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality’s Air Quality Health Advisory Program – presented by Malcolm Zachariah, Environmental Program Specialist, Air Quality Rules & Planning Section
  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Process to Enhance Exceptional Event Demonstrations for Wildfire Events using a New Modeling Approach – presented by Min Zhong, Environmental Group Manager, Bureau of Air Quality
  • San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District’s Comprehensive Wildfire Prevention and Smoke Impact Response Program – presented by Jessica Olsen, Director of Community Strategies & Resources

“The designations this year included inspiring work from state and local air agencies,” said AAPCA’s Secretary-Treasurer and AAPCA Best Practices Committee Co-Chair Hether Krause with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. “Each program demonstrates ways air agencies are protecting air quality and public health, especially when faced with complex air quality management challenges such as wildfires.”

The Association will further spotlight 2024 Best Practices in Air Pollution Control in its annual State Air Trends & Successes: The StATS Report and on a national webinar later this year.

AAPCA was pleased to welcome more than 140 attendees from more than two dozen state and local air agencies, multiple U.S. EPA Offices and Regions, and several non-governmental organizations.
